What makes Buhl projects different
An older town with deep farm roots
Buhl was founded on April 17, 1906, and named for Frank H. Buhl, a Pennsylvania investor in the Twin Falls South Side irrigation project. The town sits along the route of the historic Oregon Trail, and about 4,560 people lived there in the 2020 census. Buhl calls itself the Trout Capital of the World because of the fish hatcheries around town, which raise a large share of the rainbow trout sold in the U.S.
Buhl has a compact historic downtown where Buhl City Hall, Hotel Buhl and the Ramona Theater are on the National Register of Historic Places. Around town, historic barns and farmhouses sit on working farm ground. Older homes and acreage both shape what a project here looks like.
Buhl requires more permits than most neighbors
This is the biggest difference for homeowners. The City of Buhl Building Department says permits are required for fences, roof replacement and new windows, along with decks, additions and most structures over 200 square feet. In Twin Falls, by contrast, a standard reroof and a fence under 7 feet don’t need a building permit.
Buhl lists typical residential review at 5 to 10 business days, and permits expire if work doesn’t start within 120 days. Fence height, location and material rules are in the Buhl City Code. Outside city limits, the Twin Falls County Building Department handles permits.
Canal water, backflow and a newer pressurized pipeline
Buhl is inside the Twin Falls Canal Company service area. A project reported in 2023 on the canal company’s Clover Tract near Buhl is converting about 4,000 irrigated acres from open ditches to an enclosed, pressurized pipeline. In town, the city requires any irrigation system connected to city drinking water to have a backflow prevention device that’s tested every year, with results sent to Public Works.
Weather: open ground on the west end
Buhl sits at about 3,770 feet on the western side of the Magic Valley. It has the same semiarid climate as the rest of the valley, with dry summers, freezing winter nights and big day-to-night temperature swings. The National Weather Service in Pocatello issues wind advisories and high wind warnings for the Magic Valley, and farm ground around Buhl offers little shelter from those gusts.
