What makes Kimberly projects different

A small town that grew fast

Kimberly was founded in 1905 and named for Peter L. Kimberly, an investor in Milner Dam, which made large-scale irrigation possible on the south side of the Snake River. The town grew from about 3,260 people in 2010 to about 4,630 in 2020, roughly 42 percent in ten years.

That means Kimberly has two kinds of housing: an older core around the original town center, and newer subdivisions built on former farmland. Newer subdivisions may have covenants (CC&Rs) that set fence styles, heights or colors, so check yours before choosing materials.

Irrigation research next door

Kimberly is home to the University of Idaho Kimberly Research and Extension Center and the USDA-ARS Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory, which sit across the road from each other northeast of town. USDA researchers there study how water soaks into the Magic Valley’s calcareous, silty soils. These soils are alkaline, and water runs off if sprinklers put it down faster than it soaks in, which affects how zones should be laid out and timed.

City pressurized irrigation

The City of Kimberly provides both drinking water and pressurized irrigation to residents, and bills for them as city utilities. Kimberly is also inside the Twin Falls Canal Company service area, which delivers irrigation water to farm ground around town. For homeowners, that means lawn and garden sprinklers usually run on irrigation water, not the house supply, during the season.

Weather: a little higher, just as windy

Kimberly sits at about 3,910 feet, somewhat higher than Twin Falls, on open ground east of the city. It shares the Magic Valley’s semiarid climate: dry summers, freezing nights in winter and wide day-to-night temperature swings. The National Weather Service in Pocatello issues wind advisories and high wind warnings for the Magic Valley, and summer thunderstorm gusts are a common cause of roof and fence damage.

Inside city limits, building permits go through the City of Kimberly Building, Planning and Zoning office at City Hall on Highway 30 East. The city’s building code is in Title 15 of the Kimberly City Code. Homes outside city limits go through the Twin Falls County Building Department.
